Frank Delaney, a well-known Scottish boxing coach, has returned to the sport after losing both of his legs due to sepsis. Delaney, who has worked with notable fighters such as 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Reese Lynch and professionals Ross Henderson and Willy Hutchinson, faced a serious health crisis in January 2025. Following complications from diabetes, a heart attack, and kidney failure, he developed sepsis that necessitated bilateral below-knee amputations.
Despite these life-altering challenges, Delaney has demonstrated remarkable resilience. He underwent rehabilitation to learn to walk again using prosthetic limbs and now relies on a mobility scooter while coaching at the Springhill Boxing Club in Shotts. The gym is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary, and Delaney remains an inspiring figure within the club and the wider boxing community.
In recognition of his contributions to sport and his perseverance, Delaney was inducted into the North Lanarkshire Sporting Hall of Fame in 2025 alongside other distinguished individuals, including members of the historic Lisbon Lions football team. Looking ahead, he has set personal goals such as regaining the ability to walk unaided, underscoring his determination to overcome adversity.
Delaney’s continued involvement in training athletes at Springhill Boxing Club highlights his commitment to the sport and to nurturing new talent, maintaining his influence despite physical setbacks. His story stands as a testament to strength and dedication in the face of significant health challenges.
