The boxing drama *A Thousand Blows* has been cancelled after two series on the streaming service Disney+. The period drama, executive produced by Steven Knight and featuring Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty, debuted in 2025 and portrayed the story of immigrant boxer Hezekiah Moscow, played by Malachi Kirby, who arrived in London’s East End during the late Victorian era and developed a rivalry with fellow fighter Henry “Sugar” Goodson, portrayed by Graham.
Set against the backdrop of London’s underworld, the series also focused on Mary Carr, played by Doherty, the leader of the Forty Elephants—a historical female gang known for using charm and cunning to commit thefts and robberies. The narrative combined elements of sport, crime, and romance, drawing comparisons to Knight’s earlier hit series *Peaky Blinders*.
Despite the high production values, an acclaimed cast, and the involvement of Knight, insiders say the show struggled to stand out amid a crowded drama marketplace. A source familiar with the production suggested that while the series had significant potential, it failed to capture the same level of audience engagement as comparable gangster dramas available across multiple channels and streaming platforms. The insider also noted that Disney+ typically tends not to continue original dramas beyond two seasons, citing *Rivals* as a rare exception.
The network’s decision to discontinue *A Thousand Blows* comes as *Peaky Blinders* prepares to return for its seventh season on BBC One, underscoring the continued popularity of Knight’s work despite the cancellation. Knight remains active with other projects, including upcoming seasons of *SAS Rogue Heroes* and *House of Guinness*, as well as the screenplay for the next James Bond film.
