A 12-year-old boy faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, after allegedly striking a Toronto police officer with a stolen vehicle in the city’s east end early Monday morning. Two other youths, aged 12 and 13, were also in the car at the time, according to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Ontario’s police watchdog.

Police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle around 1 a.m. near the Leaside Bridge. Four officers driving two vehicles attempted to contain the stolen car by boxing it in. As the 12-year-old driver tried to escape, he reportedly collided with a police officer. The officer then fired several shots at the vehicle, though it remains unclear whether the officer discharged his weapon before or after being hit, SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette said.

The stolen car was abandoned approximately one kilometre south of the bridge at the intersection of Floyd Avenue and Donlands Avenue. The 12-year-old driver was apprehended about one block further south at Mortimer Avenue and taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Officials have not yet determined the cause of the boy’s injuries, which could be related to a bullet, glass from the vehicle, or other factors, Denette noted.

One of the other children was taken into custody, while authorities continue to search for the third individual. The officer who was struck required medical attention for non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, the 12-year-old driver faces accusations of vehicle theft, failure to stop for police, and assaulting a police officer. The SIU is continuing its investigation into the incident.
