A nine-year-old boy from Belfast has returned to school following a successful heart transplant, marking the end of an unprecedented eight-year wait for the life-saving operation. Daithi Mac Gabhann, who was born with defects affecting the left side of his heart, underwent the procedure in July at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.

Daithi’s father, Mairtin Mac Gabhann, a teacher, described organ donation as a profound gift that not only saved his son’s life but transformed their entire family’s future. He emphasized the importance of conversations around organ donation, urging the public to consider its impact.

The transplant came after one of the longest waits recorded for a pediatric heart recipient in the UK. The surgery was performed at the same hospital where another notable heart recipient, campaigner Max Johnson, had been operated on in 2017 following a heart donated by Keira Ball, a 36-year-old donor. Mairtin credited the earlier transplant stories as sources of hope during Daithi’s long wait.

Daithi’s case has also had a broader impact on organ donation legislation in Northern Ireland. In 2023, the Northern Ireland Assembly enacted “Daithi’s Law,” which shifted the region’s organ donation policy to an opt-out consent system in line with other parts of the United Kingdom. The change is seen as a significant step toward increasing organ donation rates in the region.

Throughout his recovery, Daithi was supported by Scott House, a facility operated by The Sick Children’s Trust that provides a free home-like environment for families of children receiving treatment at the Freeman Hospital. His story has drawn messages of encouragement from prominent figures including Irish President Catherine Connolly, professional boxer Tyson Fury, and footballers Conor Bradley and Alan Shearer, highlighting the widespread public interest and support.

Daithi’s journey underscores both the challenges faced by children with serious heart conditions and the critical role of organ donation in saving lives. His family continues to advocate for awareness and acceptance of organ donation to help more patients receive the treatments they desperately need.
