Stephen Bradley, manager of Shamrock Rovers, dismissed suggestions that his team could rely on a “safety net” as they prepare to face Ararat-Armenia in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round on Wednesday evening at Tallaght Stadium. The League of Ireland champions are facing a crucial 2-0 deficit from their away fixture last week.

A successful comeback would secure Shamrock Rovers a place in the group stage of the UEFA Conference League for the fourth time in five years and provide a pathway to the Europa League, along with a minimum UEFA prize fund of €3.1 million. Bradley’s side are aiming to replicate their recent turnaround against Floriana, where they overturned a 2-0 first-leg loss to win 5-1 and progress in the competition.

Speaking ahead of the match, Bradley emphasized the team’s singular focus on advancing to the next round of the Champions League. “This is the only chance,” he said. “I hate when people talk about safety nets or second chances. We have worked for years for these situations. We don’t live on second chances. That’s not when you are at your best. We need to go and fight.”

The manager highlighted the importance of mental resilience and preparation, stating that Shamrock Rovers seek to perform under pressure rather than depend on fallback options. He recalled last year’s Conference League qualification campaign when no such alternative pathways were available, noting that his team thrives when “our backs are against the wall.”

Bradley also addressed the team’s defensive lapses in last week’s match, describing the goals conceded as “really poor” and a frustration. Despite this, he found positives in the team’s overall away performance and the opportunity to learn from recent experiences. “We know we need to be better, of course, we are against a good team but we can do it. No doubt in my mind we can do it,” he said.

The manager will be without several players due to injury, including Danny Grant, Dan Cleary, John McGovern, and Victor Ozhianvuna, as the Rovers look to overturn the aggregate scoreline.
