Comedian Russell Brand is currently on trial at Southwark Crown Court facing seven charges related to alleged sexual offences against six women, with incidents said to have occurred between 1999 and 2009. He denies all allegations, which include three counts of rape, three of sexual assault, and one count of attempted indecent assault.
During the ninth day of proceedings, the court heard from Brand’s statements given during police interviews between 2023 and 2025. The 51-year-old acknowledged leading a “very promiscuous life” in the past but asserted that all his sexual encounters were consensual. He described his past behavior as openly denounced and denied any engagement in non-consensual activity. Brand further claimed that the accounts provided by the women were “invented or re-imagined,” attributing this to media misrepresentation and the framing of consensual encounters in an unfavorable light years later.
Brand detailed that he had kissed “hundreds” of people and interacted with fans in a friendly and consensual manner. He rejected allegations that he forced himself on anyone, stating he never touched breasts or engaged in sexual acts without consent. He also addressed a specific allegation involving an attempted indecent assault in 2001, saying he never forced anyone into a toilet or engaged in non-consensual oral sex.
The court was informed that Brand used the social networking site MySpace to meet random women during the period in question. A charge of indecent assault was replaced by one of attempted indecent assault following a judicial review, with the judge ruling there was insufficient evidence for the original count. The judge also noted it was likely Brand had been invited to the party where the alleged attempted indecent assault occurred.
Brand’s defense began presenting their case on the day following these statements. The trial is ongoing as the jury considers the evidence presented by both the prosecution and defence.
