Jarrad Branthwaite has attributed a rehabilitation programme in Germany, which examined the connection between his injuries and neurological and movement patterns, as a key factor in his recent return to the England national football team. The Everton defender’s improved form this season earned him a place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Spain, Czechia, and Croatia.

The 24-year-old centre-back has faced repeated hamstring and groin injuries over recent years, limiting him to just 10 Premier League appearances last season. Seeking a solution, Branthwaite spent three to four weeks during the summer at the MYOS sports and health clinic in Munich, where he underwent a comprehensive assessment involving a multi-disciplinary team in collaboration with Everton’s medical staff.

Branthwaite described the programme as “complex,” highlighting its focus on a holistic approach to his body. He explained that the work involved analysing movement patterns alongside brain function, aiming to address the underlying causes of his recurring injuries. The defender hopes this intervention has been effective in reducing his susceptibility to injury.

In April, Branthwaite suffered another hamstring setback during the Merseyside derby against Liverpool, an incident that ended his season and dashed hopes of a late call-up to England’s World Cup squad. He recalled the mental challenges of dealing with repeated injuries, including doubts about his body’s reliability and playing cautiously to avoid further damage.

Since then, Branthwaite has managed his training load carefully during preseason, which has allowed him to remain consistently involved in Everton’s Premier League campaign this season. He made his England debut as a substitute in a UEFA Nations League match against Bosnia and Herzegovina in June 2024, and had targeted a recall alongside regaining full fitness.

Discussing his recent call-up, Branthwaite said he learned of it while having breakfast and described it as a “proud moment” and a significant milestone following a challenging period of fitness issues. He acknowledged the strong competition for defensive positions within the England squad, mentioning centre-backs Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa as established options.

Branthwaite’s immediate goal is to maintain fitness and accumulate as many playing minutes as possible to solidify his position for future England selections. He remains optimistic about contributing to both Everton and the national team, emphasizing the depth of talent available and expressing confidence in his own abilities.
