Bravo’s reality series “Next Gen NYC,” which spotlights the lives of children of prominent “Real Housewives” stars, has emerged as an unexpected hit, particularly among Gen Z audiences. The show recently concluded its second season, which set a new Bravo record for next-day streaming with three million viewers across platforms during its debut week.
“Next Gen NYC” follows a familiar reality TV format rooted in early 2000s staples like “The Real World” and “Vanderpump Rules,” capturing the awkward, often frivolous experiences of young adults navigating relationships, social dynamics, and personal challenges. Unlike other Bravo franchises that tend to focus on high-stakes drama involving issues such as divorce, illness, or legal troubles, “Next Gen” leans into lighter themes, including dating mishaps, fashion disputes, and everyday quarrels, resonating with fans looking for a more casual, entertaining viewing experience.
The cast largely consists of celebrity offspring, often referred to as “nepo babies.” Key members include Riley Burruss, daughter of “Housewives of Atlanta” alum Kandi Burruss; Brooks Marks, son of “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” star Meredith Marks; Ariana Biermann, daughter of Kim Zolciak-Biermann from “Atlanta”; and Gia Giudice, daughter of “Real Housewives of New Jersey” star Teresa Giudice. They are joined by Rowan Henchy, daughter of actress Brooke Shields, and Ava Dash, whose parents are entrepreneur Damon Dash and fashion designer Rachel Roy.
Brooks Marks, who also played a role in assembling the cast, said the show’s success surpassed expectations. Burruss echoed this sentiment, noting that the group initially did not anticipate such a strong response. Emira D’Spain, another cast member, reflected on the show’s growth, remarking that what began as a project focused on fun and youthful messiness evolved into a significant platform.
Season two featured several notable storylines, including relationship drama centered on Ariana Biermann. After ending a long-term relationship with Hudson McLeroy, heir to the Zaxby’s fast-food chain, Biermann’s romantic entanglements with fellow cast members Liam Obergfoll and Zakkour became a focal point, culminating in a public kiss that stirred on-screen tensions.
While the series tends to avoid deeply serious subject matter, it has not sidestepped controversy entirely. One significant plotline involved conflict between Zakkour and D’Spain following inappropriate comments made by Zakkour about D’Spain’s identity as a transgender woman, a storyline that brought a more serious tone to the otherwise lighthearted series.
Though some critics have pointed to a lack of the intense conflict common in other Bravo shows, viewers have praised “Next Gen NYC” for its fresh approach and simmering authenticity. Its mostly Gen Z cast and emphasis on everyday personal dramas distinguish it from the franchise’s traditional offerings, highlighting a younger generation’s perspective within the larger “Real Housewives” universe.
