A physical altercation broke out Monday night between groups of Argentinian and Algerian soccer supporters in Times Square, New York City, police reported. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. near the intersection of 46th Street and Broadway, shortly before the two national teams were set to face each other in the World Cup.

Witnesses and surveillance footage showed a large group of fans from both sides engaging in pushing and shoving, which escalated into multiple individuals throwing punches. The New York Police Department responded to the disturbance and detained one person. That individual was issued a criminal summons for disorderly conduct.

Authorities described the incident as isolated and did not report any serious injuries. The rivalry between the two fan bases, which heightened due to the upcoming match, contributed to tensions in the area. Police maintained a presence in the vicinity to prevent further confrontations as the game approached.
