Brazilian tennis player Joao Fonseca has announced he will sit out the upcoming Asian swing of the ATP tour to focus on recovering both physically and mentally after a difficult season marked by injuries. The 20-year-old, currently ranked 28th in the world, shared the decision on Monday via Instagram, describing 2026 as a challenging year due to multiple injuries that forced him to miss key tournaments and hampered his performance on court.

Fonseca explained that after consulting extensively with his team, they collectively agreed that it was best to prioritize his health by taking a break and allowing time for his body and mind to recuperate. Earlier this year, the young Brazilian was sidelined for the US Open because of abdominal pain, which contributed to the interruption of his season.

Despite the setbacks, Fonseca made a notable return last weekend to help Brazil secure a 3-1 victory over Switzerland in the Davis Cup held in Rio de Janeiro. He delivered a strong performance in his singles match, coming from a set down to defeat Dominic Stricker 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and give Brazil an early lead in the tie.

Reflecting on his recent comeback, Fonseca acknowledged the considerable effort it took to represent his country and said he still requires additional time to fully recover. His choice to withdraw from the Asian portion of the tour comes as he aims to rebuild his fitness and form ahead of future competitions.

The decision underscores the physical and mental toll that the professional tennis circuit can impose on young athletes, particularly those striving to break through the ranks amid ongoing injury challenges. Fonseca’s management and supporters have voiced optimism that this planned hiatus will enable him to return stronger and better prepared for the remainder of the season.
