Oldham secured a convincing 4-1 victory over Cheltenham Town in a League Two encounter on Saturday, breaking a recent goal drought by netting three times within the opening 41 minutes.
After a run of only one goal in their preceding four league matches, Oldham found clinical form early in the game. Joe Kavanagh opened the scoring in the 19th minute by converting a shot from left-back Favour Fawunmi, marking Kavanagh’s fifth goal of the season. Six minutes later, Oldham doubled their advantage through Robson, who headed home at the far post from a corner delivered by Fawunmi, claiming his first goal for the club. Stoke City loanee Fawunmi capped the first-half scoring for Oldham when he was set up by Kavanagh to net his second goal for the club in the 41st minute.
Cheltenham managed to pull one back during first-half stoppage time, with Willcox firing home from a corner to score his first senior goal. However, Oldham restored their three-goal lead in the 81st minute when Robson struck a low drive into the far corner, securing the win for his side.
Oldham’s manager praised Fawunmi’s contribution and overall team performance, emphasizing the impact that scoring early goals can have on a match. He noted the importance of clinical finishing after recent struggles to find the net.
Cheltenham’s manager Steve Cotterill acknowledged the disruption caused by the late loss of centre back Robbie Cundy in the warm-up, which forced a last-minute reshuffle of his team. Nevertheless, he declined to attribute the defeat to that factor, stating that the team’s overall performance was insufficient. Cotterill expressed frustration with the defending across all the goals conceded and was critical of the team’s showing throughout the match.
