Maria Schenkel, a 41-year-old mother from Greenville, South Carolina, identified an uncommon early warning sign of breast cancer involving a sudden and persistent change in body odor. Initially dismissing the intensified odor as a result of a hectic lifestyle, Schenkel later discovered a two-inch cancerous tumor in her breast after several months, following the detection of a lump. She has since undergone a mastectomy and is currently cancer-free two years post-treatment.
Medical experts confirm that alterations in body odor can signal the presence of certain cancers. Dr. John Riches, a consultant haematologist at Barts and the London NHS Trust, explains that cancer cells release chemical compounds, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), into the bloodstream. These compounds may then be emitted through the skin, breath, and other bodily excretions, potentially altering body odor. While it is uncommon for individuals to perceive these changes themselves, ongoing research aims to utilize VOC analysis in early cancer detection. Studies have demonstrated that urine and breath analysis can identify early tumors in gastrointestinal, liver, and prostate cancers, and similar programs are investigating VOCs related to breast cancer.
Schenkel’s experience was accompanied by additional symptoms such as fatigue, leg heaviness, sugary cravings, bloating, unexplained bruising, and breast soreness. A subsequent ultrasound, mammogram, and biopsy confirmed invasive ductal carcinoma, the most prevalent form of breast cancer. Despite maintaining a healthy lifestyle and lacking a family history of cancer, her diagnosis highlighted the unpredictability of the disease.
In the United Kingdom, approximately 60,000 women receive a breast cancer diagnosis annually. Although 80% of cases occur in women over 50, diagnoses among younger women have risen significantly. Early-onset breast cancers now account for one in five cases, a 20% increase since the early 1990s. Factors such as obesity, consumption of ultra-processed foods, and environmental pollution are believed to contribute to this trend. Younger women often attribute symptoms to hormonal fluctuations, resulting in delayed diagnosis. Research indicates that women under 40 face a 40% higher mortality risk from breast cancer compared to older patients.
Typical breast cancer signs include lumps, changes to skin texture, pain, or alterations in breast size or shape. Schenkel advises women to take symptoms seriously and seek medical evaluation promptly. “If something keeps bothering you or doesn’t feel normal, get it checked,” she said, emphasizing that awareness and early intervention can significantly affect outcomes.
