Brennan Johnson has struggled to find form since joining Everton, raising concerns about the winger’s confidence and adaptation at his new club. In a recent match, Johnson saw limited involvement, recording only ten touches, six passes, and no successful dribbles over 72 minutes before being substituted for Tyler Dibling. Dibling, a 20-year-old teammate, displayed more activity with 24 touches after coming on but has yet to start a Premier League game this season.
Johnson’s difficulties at Everton follow a challenging period at Crystal Palace, where he spent six months after transferring in January. Since moving, he has scored just one goal for Everton, which came in a Carabao Cup match against Preston North End. Earlier in his career, Johnson had experienced significant success at Tottenham Hotspur, where he was the club’s top scorer two seasons ago with 18 goals. That tally was bolstered by a system under manager Ange Postecoglou that utilized wide forwards arriving late in the penalty area.
Dibling has featured twice in the Carabao Cup first team and is anticipated to start in the upcoming league fixture against Newcastle United on Thursday. His increasing role suggests the coaching staff sees potential in his impact off the bench or as a starter.
Commenting on Johnson’s situation, Aston Villa defender Matty Cash acknowledged the challenges the winger has faced during the preseason, noting that Johnson had limited preparation time at Chelsea before joining Everton. “At the start it was taking time. Now — wow,” Cash said, implying that Johnson’s adjustment to new environments has been gradual but may be improving.
As Johnson continues to adapt, Everton will likely monitor his progress closely, balancing patience with the need for immediate contributions as the season unfolds.
