Efforts to address the underrepresentation of women on Wikipedia continue to gain momentum, with volunteers working to correct longstanding systemic biases in historical documentation. Though public attention has highlighted the disparities in coverage of women’s lives on the online encyclopedia, projects aimed at increasing female biographies have been active for years.

One such initiative, Women in Red, was launched in October 2014 with the goal of expanding the presence of women on the platform. At that time, just 15.53% of biographies on Wikipedia were about women. As of October 2026, this figure has increased to 20.42%, driven in large part by volunteers who dedicate time to sourcing reliable information and creating new entries. Currently, the Women in Red project contributes approximately 1,500 new biographies each month.

Despite these advances, contributors face significant challenges rooted in broader historical and archival practices. Many women’s lives have been inadequately recorded by early historians and archivists, making it difficult to bring their stories into public awareness. This gap is reflected not only on Wikipedia but also in other fields: a review of published biographies reveals a continued dominance of the “Great Man” view of history, with far more books focused on men than on women.

The volunteer editors working on Wikipedia are further limited by the platform’s policies, which prohibit original research. This reliance on secondary sources underscores the urgent need for more well-researched, well-sourced biographies and compilations to support a more inclusive historical record. Efforts such as Sandi Toksvig’s proposed Mappa Mundi initiative are seen as complementary to volunteer-driven projects, rather than competing efforts.

Broad consensus among those involved in this work emphasizes the importance of collaboration to build a more representative history, integrating existing scholarship with ongoing contributions from editors committed to reducing systemic bias. Through these combined efforts, advocates hope to continue bringing women’s lives and achievements out of the shadows and into full view on one of the world’s most accessed knowledge platforms.
