Britain is preparing for a prolonged heatwave expected to last through next week, with parts of southern England under an amber heat alert as rising temperatures coincide with the Royal Ascot horse racing event. Meteorologists have forecast a European "heat dome," bringing elevated humidity and temperatures, though conditions are anticipated to be less sunny compared to the record-breaking heat experienced in May.
Forecaster Gregory Wolverson highlighted that the heatwave may come with increased cloud cover and occasional thunderstorms in some areas, creating an oppressive atmosphere rather than clear, dry heat. Public health officials have issued warnings emphasizing the potential dangers the humid conditions pose, especially to the elderly and individuals with pre-existing health issues.
In response to the expected weather, Royal Ascot organizers have taken measures to ensure visitor safety by adding extra hydration stations throughout the venue. The event also featured notable appearances, with television presenters Holly Willoughby and Maura Higgins drawing attention during Ladies Day by wearing striking white outfits. Attendees showcased elaborate headwear, including designs fashioned from ostrich feathers, pipe-cleaner flowers, and even a miniature chair.
The royal family was prominently represented at the meet, with King Charles and Queen Camilla hosting actor Stanley Tucci and his wife, Felicity Blunt, in the royal box. Other members of the royal family, including the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Princess Anne, and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, were also present to enjoy the races at the Berkshire venue.
