A Norwegian spaceport has taken the lead in Europe’s nascent orbital launch capabilities, leaving Britain’s ambitions momentarily behind as it continues developing its own space infrastructure. The recent successful orbital launch from Norway’s Andoya Spaceport marked a milestone for the region, highlighting the progress made by the Arctic island site compared with the United Kingdom’s ongoing efforts.
Andoya Spaceport, located within the Arctic Circle, achieved an orbital launch last weekend using a Spectrum rocket operated by German startup Isar Aerospace. This launch marked the first time a rocket from a European launch site successfully reached orbit, a significant accomplishment in the continent’s growing involvement in space activities. The UK was competing to achieve this milestone first with its SaxaVord Spaceport on Unst, the northernmost of the Shetland Islands, but the Norwegian launch preempted Britain’s debut orbital mission.
Scott Hammond, chief executive of SaxaVord Spaceport, expressed disappointment at missing out on the first European orbital launch but praised Andoya’s longstanding experience. “Getting into space is a hell of an achievement,” Hammond said. He noted that Andoya has been conducting suborbital launches for the past five decades and benefits from established infrastructure, whereas the UK effort is building its capabilities from the ground up.
Britain’s space ambitions have faced several setbacks. Earlier attempts at orbital launches via Virgin Orbit ended unsuccessfully due to a rocket engine filter failure, which caused the vehicle to reenter the atmosphere before reaching orbit. Virgin Orbit subsequently ceased operations, and Spaceport Cornwall at Newquay Airport has not secured new clients after its aeroplane-based launch approach. Attention has thus shifted to SaxaVord, which has constructed launchpads, signed contracts with rocket companies, and aims to complete its first launch, initially planned for later this year.
The UK government recently pledged an additional £30 million in funding for SaxaVord Spaceport as part of a broader national space strategy. This investment is intended to advance the country’s capabilities and encourage private sector participation, with matching private funding expected. Hammond expressed optimism about the readiness of both the infrastructure and regulatory framework, noting that aviation and maritime permits required for launches should be approved quickly.
While the European Space Agency traditionally launches rockets from its facility in French Guiana to leverage favorable equatorial orbits, sites like Andoya and SaxaVord represent efforts to establish European orbital launch capabilities closer to home. The competition reflects the growing interest among European nations in developing independent access to space, despite the challenges posed by geography and technical complexity.
Though Norway currently leads the regional race for orbital access, the UK’s investments signal a commitment to eventually establishing a fully operational spaceport, potentially strengthening the country’s position in the global space sector in the years ahead.
