Jodrell Bank Observatory, home to Britain’s largest radio telescope network, is facing closure due to significant cuts in government funding. The decision, announced by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), will result in the withdrawal of financial support for the e-Merlin network, a national radio astronomy facility based at Jodrell Bank, when the current funding agreement ends in March 2028.
Founded in 1945 by physicist Bernard Lovell, the observatory has played a pivotal role in radio astronomy, contributing to major scientific discoveries including black holes, the afterglow of the Big Bang, and monitoring human space exploration. The site features the Lovell Telescope, which, upon completion in 1957, was the largest steerable radio telescope in the world. The e-Merlin system connects the Lovell Telescope with six other telescopes across the UK, providing a resolution comparable to that of the Hubble Space Telescope and enabling research into dark matter, dark energy, and the search for extraterrestrial life.
The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), which operates under UKRI, cited the need to make substantial savings following cost overruns due to rising electricity and staffing costs, as well as increased foreign exchange expenses associated with international collaborations such as those at the CERN nuclear research laboratory near Geneva. An STFC spokesperson described the funding reallocation as the outcome of a rigorous prioritisation process aimed at focusing investment on areas expected to deliver the greatest long-term scientific capability and value to the UK.
The announcement has drawn strong criticism from the scientific community. The president of the Royal Astronomical Society, Professor Jim Wild, described the move as devastating for UK astronomy and warned that the loss of unique and globally significant observatories risks the country’s scientific future and the nurturing of future generations of astronomers.
Researchers and academics associated with Jodrell Bank echoed these concerns. Dr. Megan Argo, an astrophysicist at the University of Lancashire, called the cuts an act of “scientific vandalism,” stressing the observatory’s ongoing role in groundbreaking research on planet, star, and galaxy formation. Professor Brian Cox of the University of Manchester, which operates Jodrell Bank, criticized the funding reductions as “devastating” and the result of hasty decisions by UKRI.
The cuts are expected to lead to approximately 800 job losses across multiple facilities and projects, including a 20% reduction in UK participation in the Rubin Observatory in Chile and a 45% cut to the Next Generation Transit Survey, which searches for solar systems similar to our own. Funding for future instruments on the Extremely Large Telescope and the UK’s involvement in the Event Horizon Telescope project, responsible for imaging the black hole at the center of the Milky Way, have also been withdrawn.
Jodrell Bank Observatory’s associate director, Professor Simon Garrington, expressed shock at the funding withdrawal, noting that it effectively undermines the facility’s future. He is seeking to challenge the decision but remains hopeful that alternative funding sources might sustain some operations.
The observatory, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019 and a key player in international astronomy for decades, now faces significant uncertainty as its capacity to support scientific research is scaled back. The broader impact on the UK’s leadership in astronomy and related scientific fields is under close scrutiny as the community responds to these funding cuts.
