A British banker has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in Portugal for the fatal stabbing of a teenager during a holiday outing in Lisbon. Daniel Dunbar, 30, was convicted of murdering 19-year-old Daniel Galhanas by stabbing him in the neck with a broken bottle during an altercation in 2023.

The incident occurred during a night out when Dunbar and his companions reportedly clashed with local residents. Dunbar, who is from Sidcup, South East London, admitted to assault but denied charges of murder, claiming he acted in self-defence and that he was unaware he was holding a broken bottle at the time of the stabbing.

However, the court rejected Dunbar’s defence, finding that he acted with “reckless indifference” to the victim’s life. In addition to the prison sentence, Dunbar was ordered to pay £200,000 in compensation to the victim’s family.

Representatives of the Galhanas family have indicated plans to pursue an appeal that could result in an extended prison term for Dunbar, potentially adding up to ten more years to his sentence.

The case has drawn attention to tensions between tourists and locals in Lisbon, highlighting concerns over violence during holiday incidents. Portuguese authorities concluded the trial based on the evidence presented, emphasizing the seriousness of the offence and the circumstances surrounding the altercation.
