Arran Strong, one of Britain’s leading surfers, is presumed dead after disappearing off the coast of Portugal while stand-up paddleboarding on Monday morning. The 28-year-old vanished about one mile offshore near Arrifana, a fishing village in the Algarve region.
Strong had been accompanied by his friend and coach, José Maria Pyrrait, at the time of the incident. According to Pyrrait, Strong encountered difficulties while attempting to paddle from Monte Clerigo Beach to the nearby village of Carrapateira. The pair paused during their journey to hydrate and take photographs before resuming, with Strong initially leading. Pyrrait overtook him, and upon stopping to wait, noticed Strong’s board drifting some 100 meters away. Despite diving repeatedly in the area, which was deep and had low visibility, Pyrrait was unable to locate Strong and was later rescued by a fishing vessel.
The Portuguese national maritime authority conducted an extensive search operation but confirmed that efforts were suspended without locating Strong. The authority cited challenging conditions in the area as a factor in the unsuccessful search.
Arran Strong had earned recognition as one of Britain’s top surfers and held the distinction of being the highest-ranked British male competitor at the 2024 and 2025 International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surf Games. GB Surfing expressed deep sorrow over his presumed passing.
Surfing England paid tribute to Strong's impact both in and out of the water, describing him as a major talent from an early age who represented both Team England and Great Britain on the international stage. They noted his warm personality and the positive influence he had on the surfing community, highlighting his dedication alongside his mother, with whom he traveled frequently for competitions.
Pyrrait, who has worked closely with Strong since the surfer was ten years old, described him as being like a son, emphasizing the closeness of their relationship and Strong’s presence in his life over many years.
The surfing community has expressed profound grief over the loss of a respected athlete known for his skill, generosity, and positive spirit.
