Several British players advanced through the early stages of US Open qualifying in New York on Monday, with Jacob Fearnley among those securing notable victories.

The 25-year-old Scot Fearnley moved into the third and final qualifying round after a demanding three-set match against French opponent Luka Pavlovic. Fearnley won 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-4 in a contest lasting two hours and 18 minutes. Despite appearing in control while leading 4-2 in the second set, Fearnley was broken back by Pavlovic, who then claimed the tiebreak after saving a match point. Fearnley regained composure in the decisive set, breaking at 3-2, and later saved three break points in the final game to secure victory.

Other British men also made progress, with Toby Samuel overcoming Billy Harris 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in an all-British encounter. Harry Wendelken advanced with a 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-4 win against Switzerland’s Remy Bertola. Jack Pinnington Jones, however, was eliminated after a three-set loss to Finland’s Otto Virtanen, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 3-6.

On the women’s side, Harriet Dart staged a strong comeback to defeat American teenager Kristina Penickova 5-7, 6-0, 6-3, securing a place in the final qualifying round. Dart will face fellow Briton Heather Watson, who won her match against Spain’s Angela Fita Boluda 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (5).

Additionally, Fran Jones triumphed over Germany’s Mona Barthel 7-6 (3), 1-6, 6-2 to advance, while Katie Swan was eliminated after a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 3-6 loss to American Mary Stoiana.

The players who succeed in the final qualifying round will earn spots in the US Open main draw, aiming to establish themselves in one of tennis’s four Grand Slam tournaments.
