Britt McHenry, a recent hire at the U.S. State Department, resigned on Thursday following an incident at a Washington Wizards basketball game the previous evening. McHenry, 40, had joined the department just last month as a press adviser covering Europe and Africa, and she was involved in managing media relations during the controversy surrounding Kimberly Guilfoyle’s ambassadorship.

On Wednesday, McHenry was reportedly promoted to a new position leading external affairs and press for the Economic Affairs Undersecretary, Jacob Helberg. However, her tenure in that role was short-lived. That same evening, during the Wizards-Milwaukee Bucks game at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., McHenry was involved in a confrontation that led to her being escorted out of the venue.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the altercation began after a spectator made derogatory remarks directed at Bucks player Kyle Kuzma, who is engaged to model Winnie Harlow. The heckler allegedly criticized Kuzma’s performance while making disparaging comments about Harlow’s appearance. McHenry intervened, urging the attendee to “ease up,” which reportedly caused the crowd’s attention to shift toward her. It was claimed that a drink was thrown at McHenry during the incident.

Video footage from the event, however, depicts McHenry appearing to be intoxicated as she and a companion stood to leave their row. The clip shows McHenry picking up a drink and throwing it toward seats behind her while fans chanted for her removal and threw towels in her direction as she made her way to the aisle. Despite the hostile reaction, McHenry is seen waving and blowing kisses to the crowd as she exited the arena.

Sources indicated that McHenry was compelled to resign due to the incident. A State Department spokesperson declined to comment on the matter, citing internal personnel procedures. McHenry did not respond to requests for comment.
