An avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan on July 27 has claimed the lives of 10 climbers, turning one of the region’s most iconic mountains into a scene of tragedy. Among those killed was British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal “Nims” Purja, renowned for his record-breaking speed ascents at extreme altitudes. The victims also included five Nepalese climbers, alongside teammates from Pakistan, Oman, the United States, and China.
The incident marks one of several fatal accidents in Gilgit-Baltistan during the current climbing season. Earlier this summer, French climber Guillaume Pierrel died in an avalanche on K6 in June, and Czech mountaineer Jaroslav Bansky was fatally injured in a fall on Masherbrum in July. In total, at least twelve climbers have died in the region’s high mountains this year.
While the inherent hazards of extreme-altitude mountaineering are widely acknowledged, the Broad Peak tragedy has renewed calls for stronger safety measures and improved rescue capabilities. Pakistan currently mandates permits, requires expedition registration through licensed operators, and enforces insurance coverage for climbers and high-altitude workers. However, these administrative measures have limits, particularly when responding to emergencies in remote, hazardous terrain.
Rescue efforts following the avalanche involved the use of drones and aerial reconnaissance to locate victims, with ground teams from Pakistan and Nepal conducting challenging recovery operations under severe weather conditions. Helicopter rescues were hampered by adverse weather, underscoring a critical shortfall in Pakistan’s mountain rescue infrastructure. Unlike Nepal, Pakistan does not routinely practice helicopter long-line rescue in mountainous areas, a capability experts say is urgently needed.
Safety advocates argue for the establishment of a permanent, specialized high-altitude search-and-rescue service in northern Pakistan. Such a unit would require appropriate aircraft equipped for winching or long-line operations, advanced medical teams trained for mountain emergencies, pre-positioned gear, and coordinated protocols involving local authorities, military aviation units, rescue organizations, mountain clubs, and tour operators. Regular, joint training exercises would help ensure preparedness beyond ad hoc responses.
In addition to enhancing rescue capabilities, preventive measures are being emphasized. Proposals include the creation of a centralized weather and avalanche advisory system, mandatory continuous tracking and scheduled check-ins for expeditions, and requirements for credible emergency and evacuation plans. Independent audits of operators’ safety records and guide qualifications have also been recommended. The welfare of local guides and porters—who often face the highest risks—has become a focal point, with calls for improved equipment, formal training, fair compensation, insurance, and disability protections.
An expert-led inquiry into the Broad Peak avalanche is expected to analyze weather and snow conditions, expedition decision-making, response timing, and overall effectiveness. The aim will be to draw actionable lessons rather than assign immediate blame, with findings intended for public release and use in regulatory reform.
Pakistan’s towering peaks are central to the region’s economy, attracting climbers worldwide and supporting livelihoods in Gilgit-Baltistan. Stakeholders agree that improving mountaineering safety is essential not only to protect human life but also to sustain the country’s reputation as a trustworthy destination for high-altitude adventure. While the risks posed by the Karakoram mountains can never be completely removed, efforts to reduce preventable loss and professionalize rescue operations represent steps toward greater resilience and responsibility in a notoriously dangerous environment.
