A Bronx man was ordered held without bail Monday following a weekend shooting that left 12-year-old Jacob Freytes dead and two others injured. The incident occurred Saturday afternoon outside Wanda Supermarket Deli at the intersection of Eliot Place and Grand Concourse in the Mount Eden neighborhood.

William Ferrer, 45, faces multiple charges including murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, assault, and weapons possession. Authorities said Ferrer fired several shots during a street altercation, aiming at two men—aged 34 and 25—who sustained nonfatal injuries. Jacob Freytes was struck by a stray bullet while sitting on his bicycle outside the bodega and later died at Lincoln Hospital.

Police described the shooting as stemming from a dispute involving Ferrer's brother and the two wounded men. Video footage captured the suspect drawing a handgun and opening fire as bystanders scattered. Jacob, the son of retired NYPD Sergeant Jesus Freytes, had just left the deli and was hit in the shoulder. He sought shelter inside the store but collapsed shortly afterward.

Mayor Mamdani condemned the killing at a Monday press briefing in East New York, emphasizing the tragedy of such a young victim lost to gun violence. “We can never accept that a 12-year-old boy sitting on his bicycle outside of a bodega could be killed in our city,” Mamdani said. “My heart breaks for the family of Jacob Freytes.”

The Sergeants Benevolent Association, representing city police officers, publicly called for the suspect to be prosecuted to the fullest extent. In an Instagram post, the union expressed condolences and described losing a child as every parent's worst nightmare.

Ferrer’s criminal history includes at least 12 arrests between 2004 and 2013, with charges ranging from drug possession to theft-related offenses, according to law enforcement sources. The legal outcomes of these prior cases remain unclear. After his arraignment at Bronx Criminal Court, Ferrer’s attorney, Ray Gazer, stated they look forward to the case progressing through the judicial system.

Community members rallied near Jacob's home, which is located close to the shooting site, where a memorial with candles and a sign reading “you will be missed” had been established. Friends and relatives described Jacob as a typical, kind-hearted boy whose life was tragically cut short.

“This is out of control. All these thugs with the guns, it’s out of control. We are supposed to be protecting these kids,” said family friend Missel Ventura. Another friend, 16-year-old William Ponc, called Jacob “a sweet person” and expressed his sadness over the loss.

The investigation into the circumstances of the shooting continues as the community mourns the loss of a young life in the city.
