Malaysian mixed doubles squash players Rachel Arnold and C. Ameeshenraj secured a bronze medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games after falling short of reaching the final. The pair, seeded second, were defeated 10-11, 7-11 by Hong Kong’s Toby Tse and Lai Cheuk Nam in a 19-minute semi-final match at the Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena on September 26.

The loss marked a significant upset and dashed Malaysia's hopes of adding to their target of three gold medals in squash at the Games. For Rachel Arnold, the bronze was a measure of redemption following her performance at the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2022, where she and partner Ivan Yuen did not progress beyond the group stage. Despite the podium finish, Rachel expressed disappointment in falling short of gold for Malaysia.

Ameeshenraj, making his Asian Games debut, shared similar sentiments, acknowledging the pair’s potential to perform at a higher level. “It’s still a bit disappointing, but at the end of the day, winning a medal for Malaysia means a lot,” he said, expressing optimism for future Games.

The bronze was shared with the Indian duo of Joshna Chinappa and Velavan Senthilkumar, who also exited in the semi-finals after a narrow loss to Hong Kong’s Lee Ka Yi and Tang Ming Hong. With these outcomes, the mixed doubles final featured an all-Hong Kong matchup.

Malaysia’s campaign in the mixed doubles event suffered an earlier blow when top seeds and silver medalists from Hangzhou, Syafiq Kamal and Aifa Azman, were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Hong Kong pair Lee Ka Yi and Tang Ming Hong.

These results highlighted Hong Kong’s dominance in the mixed doubles competition, as they secured both finalist positions, edging out regional contenders Malaysia and India. The bronze medal earned by Rachel and Ameeshenraj, while a valuable addition to Malaysia’s overall tally, underscored the challenges the country faces in its pursuit of squash gold at the continental level.
