Former England cricket captain Nasser Hussain has called on Harry Brook to demonstrate greater maturity following the decision to overlook him for the Test captaincy. Brook, who currently leads England’s white-ball team, was passed over for the role in the Test format, prompting Hussain to express disappointment.

Hussain highlighted what he perceives as a lack of maturity in Brook’s approach, suggesting it has hindered his ability to take on the additional responsibility of leading the Test side. "You need the mature Harry Brook to come out and it’s been lacking," Hussain said.

The former captain described the situation as a missed opportunity for England, emphasizing that Brook has the potential to be an effective leader. Hussain indicated that new England head coach Stephen Fleming would need to address this issue directly with Brook. “One of the things in new head coach Stephen Fleming’s in-tray will be to sit with him and say, ‘We’ve had to give the captaincy to someone that may not actually want to do it,’” Hussain remarked.

He added that England’s management gave the captaincy to another player because they “couldn’t trust you to do the job” at this stage. Hussain concluded by encouraging Brook to improve and prepare himself for future leadership, stating that he believes Brook should be the next Test captain for England.

Brook, who has impressed with his white-ball performances, remains a central figure in England’s cricket setup, but the captaincy decision signals that the team’s management sees further development as necessary before entrusting him with the Test leadership role.
