Brookfield Asset Management Ltd. has opened a new office in Doha as part of its broader strategy to strengthen its foothold in Qatar and expand its operations across the Gulf region. The new location will be centered around Brookfield’s global credit platform, including its affiliate Oaktree, reflecting the increasing importance of private credit in supporting economic growth within Gulf countries.
The Doha office marks a significant step in Brookfield’s involvement in Qatar, notably bolstering its role in a $20 billion artificial intelligence infrastructure project linked to Qai, an AI company backed by the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA). This local presence is expected to facilitate closer engagement with sovereign wealth funds, institutional investors, and other deal opportunities within one of the region’s fastest-developing investment landscapes.
Brookfield’s expansion mirrors a growing trend among global investment firms seeking to capitalize on the Gulf’s evolving markets. Establishing a base in Qatar positions these firms to better tap into a diversifying economy, as the country aims to reduce its reliance on liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports and attract broader foreign investment.
Qatar, once among the world’s leading LNG exporters, has accelerated efforts to diversify economic activities in response to global shifts and geopolitical tensions. The expansion of private credit platforms by firms like Brookfield underscores an increasing financial sophistication in the region and a shift toward new sectors beyond traditional energy markets.
By deepening its Gulf presence through local offices, Brookfield joins other international asset managers in positioning themselves to benefit from the region’s growing capital markets and strategic development initiatives.
