Javan Weatherspoon, 34, was charged with attempted first-degree murder following an incident in which he allegedly shot a woman he accused of knowing details about his sister’s death. The arrest came several weeks after his sister, Zenobia Weatherspoon, was found deceased in a garbage can on Chicago’s South Side. As of Tuesday afternoon, the cause of Zenobia Weatherspoon’s death remained pending at the Cook County medical examiner’s office, and police continued to classify the case as a death investigation.

Authorities said the shooting occurred Sunday afternoon in a parking lot near the 5400 block of South Halsted Street in the New City neighborhood. According to prosecutors, surveillance footage shows Javan Weatherspoon emerging from a nearby liquor store and confronting a 45-year-old woman who had been friends with Zenobia Weatherspoon and among those who discovered her body. Prosecutors allege that he accused the woman of knowing what happened to his sister.

The woman responded that she did not have any additional information, leading to a heated exchange during which Weatherspoon reportedly struck her on the head with a small firearm. Following the blow, he allegedly shot the woman once in the left pelvic area before initially walking away. He then returned after confronting a group nearby, argued again with the woman, and fired a second shot that missed.

The injured woman was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where medical tests confirmed a gunshot wound to her hip and a fractured head injury. Police recovered a .22-caliber shell casing at the scene.

Weatherspoon was apprehended on Wednesday at his residence in the 800 block of West 54th Place and was subsequently ordered held pending trial. His next court date is set for July 29.

The Cook County public defender’s office confirmed that an assistant public defender has been assigned to represent Weatherspoon. In a statement, the office emphasized that charges remain allegations at this early stage and that the case is still under investigation.

Attempts to obtain comment from Weatherspoon’s family were unsuccessful as they declined to speak. Police have provided no new updates regarding Zenobia Weatherspoon’s death as of Thursday afternoon.
