Residents across South East Queensland experienced the coldest morning of the year on Tuesday, with temperatures approaching near-freezing levels in several locations. The chill was brought on by a high-pressure ridge combined with a dry air mass moving through the region overnight Monday.
By 7 a.m., Brisbane recorded a minimum temperature of 7.5 degrees Celsius, marking its coldest start to a day so far in 2025. This was above the coldest morning recorded earlier in the month, when temperatures fell to 5.2 degrees Celsius on June 13. Other areas in the region reported significantly colder readings, with Oakey reaching a low of 1.4 degrees Celsius. Dalby recorded 3 degrees, while Goondiwindi registered 6.9 degrees. Kingaroy and Biloela also experienced near-freezing temperatures, at 1.5 and 3.4 degrees Celsius respectively.
Meteorological officials attributed the dip in temperatures to the persistent high-pressure system and dry conditions that allowed for rapid overnight cooling. The early morning frost and chilly conditions were noted as unusual for this time of year in some parts of the state, posing challenges for residents unaccustomed to such cold snaps.
The cold weather is expected to moderate as the day progresses, with temperatures rising due to increased sunshine and a shift in weather patterns. Authorities have advised residents to take appropriate measures to stay warm during the early hours when the cold is most severe.
