Brisbane Lions’ football manager Danny Daly has withdrawn from the club’s search for a new senior coach, positioning senior assistant coach Cameron Bruce as the leading candidate to succeed Chris Fagan. Daly, who had been seen as a potential future senior coach, has accepted a promotion to general manager of football, a role that will oversee the club’s football program.
The Lions confirmed Daly’s decision on Wednesday, noting that he will remain with the club and play a key role on the five-person selection panel responsible for choosing Fagan’s replacement. The panel includes club president Andrew Wellington, CEO Sam Graham, Australian basketball figure Phil Smyth—who also serves as Fagan’s mentor—along with AFL legend and club director Leigh Matthews in an advisory role. Additionally, former Lions midfielder Simon Black and sports psychologist Matt Clements will contribute to the process.
Bruce, a former Melbourne player and senior assistant coach at Brisbane, is widely regarded as the frontrunner. He brings experience from mentoring under Alastair Clarkson at Hawthorn and working closely with Fagan during Brisbane’s recent period of success. The Lions credited Bruce with having a significant impact on training and noted his strong connection with the playing group. Bruce, who manages the club’s midfield unit, had previously declined to participate in Carlton’s senior coaching search due to family commitments.
The next coach will inherit a team that recently secured its third consecutive AFL premiership after a dramatic final-minute victory against Fremantle. Fagan announced his retirement from the head coaching role last week, despite having one year remaining on his contract.
CEO Sam Graham emphasized the importance of a careful and thorough recruitment process. “The appointment of our next senior coach is an important decision for the club’s future,” Graham said. He praised Daly’s leadership in his new role and confirmed Daly’s involvement in supporting the incoming coach.
While Bruce is the early favorite, the Lions have indicated they will also consider other candidates from across the league, following a similar approach to coaching searches undertaken by other AFL clubs. Potential candidates include West Coast premiership coach Adam Simpson, former Brisbane player and Collingwood great Nathan Buckley, and Melbourne premiership coach Simon Goodwin.
The club plans to conduct the selection process methodically, aiming to identify the best candidate to lead Brisbane into its next chapter and attempt a record-equalling fourth consecutive premiership.
