The Boston Bruins continued their preseason preparations Saturday at Warrior Ice Arena with a 30-minute scrimmage bridging two practice groups, showcasing promising chemistry among some of the team’s younger players. Center Fraser Minten, 22, paired with left winger James Hagens, 19, and right winger Marat Khusnutdinov, 24, formed a line noted for its energy and puck control, despite not recording any goals. The trio maintained pressure in the offensive zone for much of their shifts, demonstrated strong awareness on both ends of the ice, and generated scoring chances in just their third day playing together.
Coach Marco Sturm praised the group’s performance, especially highlighting Hagens’ offensive potential during the scrimmage. “They had some chances,” Sturm said. “I think James could have scored three or four goals today, [he] missed the net a few times. But it was fun to watch.” Hagens has carried momentum from the Prospects Challenge last week in Buffalo, where he tallied six goals in two games. Sturm noted the winger’s speed, situational awareness, and consistent puck presence.
The Bruins are set to open preseason play Sunday evening against the Washington Capitals, with the “kid line” among the groups expected to build further chemistry on the ice.
Another line drawing attention consists of Sean Kuraly, Mark Kastelic, and Alex Steeves, all of whom are projected to be in the lineup against Washington. Kuraly and Kastelic were key contributors to Boston’s physical fourth line last season, often paired with Tanner Jeannot, while Steeves set personal bests in games played (43), goals (9), and points (16). Steeves has been noted for his aggressive forechecking, physical play, and ability to disrupt opponents, creating offensive opportunities for himself and teammates.
Sturm emphasized the importance of consistency for Steeves to secure a regular roster spot. “He brings a lot of energy,” Sturm said. “When he plays that way—getting on the forecheck and first on pucks—he was at his best. When he doesn’t, it’s going to be hard for him.” Last season, an injury-riddled lineup offered Steeves more opportunity; with a healthier roster, confidence and regularity in his style will be necessary going forward.
On defense, Will Borgen has integrated smoothly after being acquired from the New York Rangers on July 1. Paired frequently with veteran Hampus Lindholm during camp, the duo has displayed strong on-ice communication. Borgen has drawn on existing connections, having played and roomed with teammates Mikey Eyssimont, Morgan Geekie, and Casey Mittelstadt at various levels, and shared international ice time with Mason Lohrei and Steeves at the World Championships.
The morning scrimmage ended with the Black team edging out a 1-0 victory, thanks to a late goal from Navrin Mutter, assisted by Brendan Gaunce. Shortly before the game-winning score, goaltender Luke Cavallin denied Matt Poitras on a penalty shot after Poitras was fouled by Dans Locmelis.
Looking ahead to the preseason opener, Michael DiPietro is expected to start in goal for Boston. The Capitals will be without stars Alex Ovechkin and Ryan Leonard but will feature players such as Tom Wilson and Cole Hutson. Among fans at Warrior Ice Arena, one was spotted sporting a Pavel Zacha Sarnia Sting jersey, adding a local junior hockey connection to the event.
