BOSTON — The Boston Bruins overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-4 in overtime on Saturday, extending their home winning streak to five games. Elias Lindholm netted the game-winning goal in overtime after the Bruins rallied in the final moments of regulation.
Chicago built a 4-2 lead with goals from Ryan Greene and Connor Bedard during the third period. However, the Bruins responded as Mason Lohrei scored to narrow the gap, followed by Morgan Geekie’s goal with just 12 seconds remaining to send the contest into overtime.
Anton Frondell contributed significantly for the Blackhawks, recording his second career two-goal game. He opened the scoring just 11 seconds into the game on a power play opportunity shortly after Will Borgen of the Bruins was penalized for a delay of game. The Blackhawks entered the game with the league’s worst power play, having converted on only 4 of 40 attempts overall and 0-for-11 on the road. Despite these challenges, Frondell’s early goal gave the visitors an initial advantage.
Bruins goaltender Michael DiPietro played a crucial role in keeping Boston competitive throughout the game. Despite being outshot 28-13 through the first two periods, DiPietro made several key saves, including a notable stop against Bedard late in the first period and a point-blank save on Patrick Kane in the second. DiPietro, who recently recorded his first NHL shutout, faced constant pressure from the Blackhawks’ offense but maintained composure.
David Pastrnak reached a milestone in the first period by scoring a breakaway goal, marking the 428th goal of his career and surpassing Patrice Bergeron to move into third place on the Bruins’ all-time goal-scoring list. Additional Bruins goals came from Casey Mittelstadt and Mason Lohrei, with Mittelstadt tying the game midway through the third period on a shot assisted by James Hagen.
The Blackhawks fell to 4-9-1 overall and 0-5-1 on the road with the loss. Following the game, Chicago is scheduled to host the Colorado Avalanche on Monday, while Boston will face the Vegas Golden Knights on the same day.
