Bruno Guimaraes has confirmed that a “difference in ideas” over transfer policy prompted his departure from Newcastle United, culminating in his £75 million move to Premier League champions Arsenal on Monday. The 28-year-old Brazilian midfielder becomes the fourth prominent Newcastle player to leave the club in the past year, following striker Alexander Isak, winger Anthony Gordon, and midfielder Sandro Tonali.
Guimaraes joined Newcastle in 2022 for £35 million, during Eddie Howe’s tenure as manager. He played a key role in helping the club avoid relegation in his first season and subsequently captained Newcastle to consecutive Champions League qualifications. The midfielder was also instrumental in the team’s historic 2025 Carabao Cup victory, which ended a 70-year wait for major domestic silverware.
In an emotional video message, Guimaraes said his exit was one of the hardest decisions he has had to make, citing a divergence in vision between himself and the club. He praised the support he received from Newcastle’s fans, teammates, management, and staff, describing the city as a place he came to love. “I am very grateful for our time together,” he said. “This move is very tough because Newcastle means so much to me, but I wanted to experience something new in my life. The departure follows a summer of significant change at Newcastle, which has seen the exit of several key players along with manager Howe’s resignation. Guimaraes met the team’s new head coach, Matthias Jaissle, for the first time on Monday in Spain. The midfielder expressed confidence in his successor and the club’s future despite his decision to move on, saying he leaves Newcastle “knowing the club is in very good hands.”
Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer commented on the situation, suggesting Guimaraes’s choice was understandable given the recent upheavals at St James’ Park. “He’s seen his manager leave. He’s seen Isak leave. He’s seen Gordon leave. He’s seen Tonali leave. And it’s a very different football club to the one it was 12 months ago,” Shearer said. “With my professional head on, I understand why he wants to move to the champions.”
