Malaysia’s Budget 2027, set to be presented on October 9, will focus on strengthening the country’s resilience amid global uncertainties, advancing artificial intelligence development, and addressing the economic concerns of young Malaysians, according to Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong.

Speaking from Johor Baru, Liew outlined that the government is formulating the budget in response to an increasingly complex international environment, including the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. These challenges underscore the need to enhance resilience in multiple areas such as supply chains, social cohesion, and fiscal stability.

“Our aim is to build strong resilience—resilience in the supply chain, among our people, socially, and financially,” Liew said at a press conference. The ministry has engaged extensively with stakeholders nationwide to collect feedback and priorities, which informed a pre-budget statement highlighting 10 key focus areas.

A significant component of Budget 2027 will be capitalizing on the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI), an area that is driving expansion in Malaysia’s semiconductor and data center industries. Liew described the AI surge as a “once-in-a-generation boom,” likening its transformative potential to that of the internet in the 1990s. The government plans to explore ways to ensure these sectors contribute more directly to the national economy and provide tangible benefits.

Addressing demographic shifts, Liew emphasized the importance of securing economic opportunities for Malaysia’s youth, noting that the country’s median age is 31. The government aims to ensure that younger generations, particularly those in Generation Z, experience job security, adequate wages, and opportunities for career advancement.

In addition, Budget 2027 will consider the needs of an aging population by enhancing social care services, healthcare, and support mechanisms for individuals responsible for elderly family members. This approach reflects growing recognition of the socio-economic implications of demographic changes in Malaysia.

As preparations continue, the Finance Ministry encourages the public to review the pre-budget statement and participate in discussions to shape the final framework. The government’s objective is to position Malaysia to navigate global challenges effectively while tapping into emerging opportunities that can sustain long-term growth and social stability.
