National squash player Harith Danial Jefri is recovering from a significant anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained in June during the Singapore Challenger tournament. The 20-year-old athlete, who had been in strong form and reaching the final against fellow Malaysian Syafiq Kamal, was forced to retire in the third set due to the injury. Medical assessments confirmed a full ACL tear, necessitating surgery and sidelining him from competition.
Harith, a two-time gold medallist at the Thailand Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, is now over a month into his rehabilitation process. He credits maintaining a positive mindset as a key factor in managing the challenges of recovery. “This is my first major injury. It is not something I can recover from in a week or two, so I have to stay positive,” he said.
The enforced hiatus has offered Harith an unexpected opportunity to reset after a demanding tour schedule, which he described as mentally exhausting. “Now I’m forced to take a break and start from scratch, which is actually something I have been wanting to do for a while. I truly believe I can come back stronger. It is good to reset and focus on other things for the time being,” he added.
During his recovery, Harith has engaged in activities such as building Lego sets to keep his mind occupied. His recent project, a Miles Morales mask, was completed within 45 minutes, illustrating his focus on concentration and patience during this downtime.
Despite the setback, Harith remains determined to resume competitive play. Currently ranked world No. 258, he is aiming to be fit in time for selection to represent Malaysia at next year’s SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur. However, he emphasizes a cautious approach to his comeback. “For now, my health and recovery come first. I would rather come back when I am fully ready than rush myself back into competition too early,” he said.
Harith’s outlook highlights the physical and mental resilience required to overcome sports injuries and the importance of a measured recovery approach in pursuit of long-term athletic success.
