St George Illawarra has secured the long-term services of promising forward Jacob Halangahu, extending his contract through the end of the 2029 NRL season. The young player is part of an emerging group of academy graduates the club is aiming to develop as it rebuilds for the future.

Halangahu joins fellow Dragons youth products Ryan and Toby Couchman, Hamish Stewart, Dylan Egan, and Loko Jr Pasifiki Tonga in committing to the club, which is currently enduring a difficult season and heading toward the NRL wooden spoon. Despite the team’s struggles, coach Dean Young emphasized the importance of retaining home-grown talent to strengthen the club’s foundation.

“Jacob is mature beyond his years and is determined to make his mark in the game,” Young said. “He’s a tough, hard-running forward who can break tackles, and his versatility allows him to play both in the back row and through the middle. Having another home-grown product re-sign with the club is a huge positive and a testament to the strength of our pathways. We’re excited to see Jacob continue his development in our colours.”

Halangahu’s journey began in the junior ranks with Minchinbury Jets and Brothers Penrith before joining the Dragons' academy at age 15. He has featured prominently for the club’s Harold Matthews Cup team and was named man of the match in St George Illawarra’s landmark 2024 SG Ball grand final victory. The club views his progress as a key element in their strategy to build a competitive roster in the coming years.
