Datuk Lin Yun Ling, managing director of Gamuda Group, emphasized the importance of human connection, continuous learning, and critical thinking in leadership during an informal session with Gamuda’s newest scholarship recipients at Menara Gamuda. The event coincided with the company’s 50th anniversary and the 30th year of its scholarship program, which has expanded its commitment to RM39 million in 2026, supporting 206 scholars selected from over 4,000 applicants.

Lin, appointed as Gamuda’s managing director at 26, shared insights about balancing academic knowledge with the unpredictable nature of real-world challenges. Highlighting the evolving role of technology, he advised scholars to harness artificial intelligence effectively without sacrificing independent judgement. He noted that while AI and automation will take over routine tasks, attributes such as empathy, sound decision-making in uncertain conditions, and strong character remain essential leadership qualities that technology cannot replace.

Addressing concerns about digital distraction, Lin cautioned against excessive screen time, urging students to seek meaningful interpersonal interactions and develop emotional intelligence through continuous reading and reflection. He underscored that academic achievements alone are insufficient for success, advocating for hands-on experience and adaptability in diverse environments.

Among the scholars was Keane Wong Ren Yi, who exemplified Lin’s call for self-awareness and bold decisions. Having initially secured a place to study pure mathematics in the United Kingdom, Wong chose to defer admission to pursue multidisciplinary engineering instead. Now poised to attend the University of Cambridge to study mechanical engineering, Wong expressed enthusiasm for engaging with diverse peers and contributing to Gamuda’s ongoing innovation upon his return.

Another scholarship recipient, Ivy Doria from Kuching, Sarawak, shared her journey marked by financial hardship and familial responsibility. Raised by a single mother alongside three siblings, Ivy balanced intensive scholarship selection stages with her final International Baccalaureate examinations. She will study computer science with a focus on artificial intelligence at the University of Toronto, aiming to apply her expertise to enhance Gamuda’s construction processes and improve infrastructure development in underserved East Malaysian communities.

The session also featured a panel of Gamuda’s young senior leaders, all former scholarship recipients who have advanced through the company’s ranks. These include Justin Chin Jing Ho, managing director of Gamuda Engineering; Lim Hui Yan, deputy managing director and head of Yayasan Gamuda; and John Lim Ji Xiong, group chief digital officer. Their career trajectories demonstrate the scholarship program’s long-term impact, with half of the company’s top 30 leaders having been scholars themselves.

This gathering served as a platform for dialogue and mentorship, reinforcing Gamuda’s sustained investment in young talent as a pillar of its future growth and contribution to nation-building.
