A 20-year-old woman was killed by a gunshot that entered her South Los Angeles home early Sunday morning, authorities reported. The incident has left her 1-year-old child without a mother, according to the family.

The Los Angeles Police Department was called to the 400 block of 103rd Street in the Vermont Vista neighborhood at approximately 3:35 a.m. After arriving, officers discovered the victim, identified by the Los Angeles County medical examiner as Maria Barrios Ventura, inside the residence. She had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head, and her death was ruled a homicide.

According to an LAPD spokesperson, a witness told officers that the shot was fired from the street and passed through the woman’s window. Barrios Ventura’s boyfriend, Omar Misael, said the couple and their baby were asleep at the time. “A stray bullet passed through here and struck my partner, and another seven shots were fired and hit around here,” he said in Spanish. He added that she died around 10 minutes after the shooting.

South Bureau homicide detectives are investigating the case. Authorities have not released any information about potential suspects or whether Barrios Ventura was the intended target of the gunfire.

In the wake of the killing, the victim’s family has faced uncertainty regarding the care of her young daughter. A GoFundMe campaign established to help cover funeral costs and support the child’s future explained that Barrios Ventura’s family lives in Guatemala, leaving little local support. The statement noted that funds raised would also assist in repatriating her body to Guatemala.

Barrios Ventura is remembered by her family as a devoted mother whose loss has had a profound impact on those who knew her. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
