Burgan Bank concluded its participation in the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group, held in Bangkok, Thailand, from October 12 to 18. The Kuwaiti financial institution was represented by a high-level delegation led by Chairman Sheikh Abdullah Nasser Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, alongside senior executives including Vice Chairman Faisal M Sarkhou and General Manager of Treasury and Financial Institutions Abdullah Abdulmajeed Marafie.

During the meetings, the delegation engaged with members of the international financial community and took part in several key Kuwait and GCC–Asia forums. These activities aligned with the bank’s strategic priorities of informed growth, strengthening institutional connectivity, and enhancing Kuwait’s presence within global financial markets.

Sheikh Abdullah emphasized the importance of not only tracking global economic developments but also understanding their implications for regional markets. He noted that factors such as geopolitics, monetary policy, technological advances, and capital flows are increasingly influencing banking decisions. For Burgan Bank, interaction with the global financial ecosystem is essential to anticipate changes and support the long-term ambitions of Kuwait’s economy.

The Annual Meetings agenda focused heavily on topics such as financial resilience, global growth prospects, investment opportunities, and the evolving role of technology in finance. These themes particularly resonated with Burgan Bank’s Kuwait-centered strategy, expanding regional footprint, and the growing cross-border needs of its clientele.

As part of the program, the delegation attended the Kuwait Banking Association’s (KBA) annual reception, which hosted prominent figures including Kuwait’s Minister of Finance, Dr Yaqoub Yousef Al-Refai; Central Bank Governor Basel Ahmed Al-Haroon; and Ambassador of Kuwait to Thailand Dr Mishal Ahmed Al-Mansour. The reception served to unite Kuwait’s financial leaders amid a week of international economic dialogue.

The delegation also participated in a luncheon hosted by Ambassador Al-Mansour, providing an opportunity to further engage with Kuwaiti officials and banking representatives. On October 14, Burgan Bank took part in the GCC–Asia Economic Forum on Banking, Investment, and Digital Infrastructure, co-organized by the KBA and the Asian Bankers Association. The forum examined practical aspects of cooperation across three main pillars: core banking and balance-sheet partnerships; cross-border investment and capital market linkages; and digital, AI-driven financial infrastructure to support cross-border finance.

Burgan Bank highlighted the importance of effective connections between banks and investors to capitalize on growing GCC–Asia economic ties. It underscored that stronger balance-sheet collaborations, enhanced capital market integration, and secure financial infrastructure are vital to transforming regional relationships into sustainable investment and financing activities.

The bank’s approach remains focused on disciplined, partnership-oriented growth. It views Kuwait as well-positioned to strengthen its role as a financial and investment hub, with greater inter-institutional connectivity unlocking opportunities for businesses operating across borders.

Further supporting this perspective, Burgan Bank drew on its diverse capabilities spanning corporate and institutional banking, treasury and financial markets, alongside investment banking and asset management via its subsidiary KAMCO Invest. The Group is also pursuing the rebranding of United Gulf Bank in Bahrain to Burgan Bank Bahrain, pending regulatory and legal approvals, as part of efforts to develop a more integrated regional banking platform with enhanced Islamic finance offerings.

Through its engagement at the IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings and related events, Burgan Bank reinforced dialogue with international and regional financial-sector counterparts on critical issues shaping banking and investment flows. These interactions underpin the bank’s long-term approach to fostering institutional relationships and maintaining awareness of global market dynamics.

As it continues to bolster its core franchise in Kuwait and explore selected regional opportunities, Burgan Bank remains focused on the partnerships, capabilities, and financial connections needed to support clients and contribute to Kuwait’s economic goals under Vision 2035.
