Warrington Wolves coach Sam Burgess has expressed optimism about the team's prospects for the Super League season after their recent comeback victory over Castleford Tigers, which moved them back into fourth place in the standings. Warrington overcame an early deficit, trailing 16-6 at one stage, to secure a convincing win with multiple players contributing tries.

England winger Matty Ashton scored twice, while Adam Holroyd, Toby King, Toa Sipley, James Harrison, Leon Hayes, and Ben Currie also crossed the line. Teenage half-back Ewan Irwin kicked eight goals, and Cai Taylor-Wray and Lachlan Webster played important roles in the win. Warrington built a 24-18 lead by halftime and extended their advantage with 24 unanswered points in the second half.

Burgess credited the resilience and composure of his squad for their recovery after a challenging first half marked by defensive lapses, particularly on the right side. He acknowledged the need for improvement in that area but praised the team for maintaining focus and sticking to their game plan.

“We’re chasing as high as we can go,” Burgess said, emphasizing the team’s ambition to reach the top of the table. “There’s a great deal of belief in the group, but there’s a lot of hard work to be done yet.” He highlighted the development of Warrington’s younger players as a positive factor, noting that injuries last year forced many of them into early game time, which has benefited the team this season.

Burgess also pointed to ongoing injury challenges during the current campaign but praised the young players for stepping up and demonstrating they can perform at a high level. This, he suggested, would be crucial for Warrington’s progress as they aim to improve their standing.

Looking ahead, Warrington face upcoming matches against Bradford and York, fixtures Burgess believes the team is well positioned to win as they continue their push for a playoff spot. He added that returning players in the coming month should bolster the squad’s efforts.

“We’re at a point now where we’ve got to build our game,” Burgess said, underscoring the need for continued progress as the season enters a critical phase.
