Burnley’s search for a first league win this season continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Derby County at Turf Moor. The Championship fixture, played on Saturday, saw Burnley briefly take the lead through Zeki Amdouni’s 34th-minute header, only for Mohammed Fuseini to score a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer for Derby.

The Ghanaian winger Fuseini, who joined Derby on loan from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise on transfer deadline day, capitalized on a late opportunity to score his first goal for the Rams. His angled shot struck the inside of the far post in the 93rd minute, denying Burnley three crucial points and leaving the team bottom of the Championship table with no victories since February.

Burnley’s new head coach Nicky Hayen, appointed in July, made six changes to the starting lineup in an effort to turn around the team’s form following a recent defeat at Swansea. Among the notable adjustments were the inclusion of winger Marcus Edwards, re-registered after initially being excluded from Burnley’s 25-man squad, and the dropping of goalkeeper Max Weiss and defender Kyle Walker. Amdouni’s goal came after Burnley exploited a defensive error from Derby goalkeeper Josh Vickers, who failed to handle a corner from Lucas Pires properly.

Despite the lead, Burnley faced pressure as Derby created chances in the second half. Burnley goalkeeper Gregoire Coudert made a key save late on to deny a 20-yard shot from Bobby Clark, while Derby systemically pressed for an equalizer. The decisive goal originated from a move involving Rhian Brewster, who set up substitute Fuseini for the equalizing strike.

Hayen expressed concern about the club’s current situation and his own position, acknowledging the disappointment shared by supporters. “I don’t know what’s going to happen. I know the fans are disappointed. We have had a really bad start,” he said after the match. He also admitted feeling worried about the future, emphasizing the difficulty and pressure on the team and management during this challenging period.

Derby head coach John Eustace praised his team’s defensive effort overall but acknowledged a lapse leading to Burnley’s goal. “We defended properly for the majority of the game, apart from the goal, which is another soft goal on our part,” he noted.

The draw extends Burnley’s winless run deep into the season, compounding pressure on Hayen and leaving questions over the team’s ability to climb the Championship standings in the near term. Conversely, Derby secured a valuable point on the road, demonstrating resilience despite the late setback.
