The USA midfielder fired a powerful left-foot shot from about 25 yards into the top corner after a pass from Sebastian Berhalter. Middlesbrough maintained control and came close to doubling their advantage before halftime, with Berhalter hitting the post late in the first half.
Burnley’s first half was described as uninspired, with the team receiving boos from the home crowd during the break. The Clarets, who sold last season’s top scorer Zian Flemming to Ipswich Town on transfer deadline day, struggled to create clear chances early on. Their attacker Will Lankshear, signed from Tottenham Hotspur and notable for his early-season scoring streak, saw opportunities go begging, including a rare miss from close range in the opening minutes.
The second half saw a marked improvement from Burnley. New signing Ugo Raghouber, who arrived from Lille in July, scored his first goal for the club in the 54th minute. Receiving a pass from Zeki Amdouni well outside the penalty area, Raghouber advanced unchallenged before curling a precise left-footed shot past Middlesbrough goalkeeper Radek Vitek to equalize. Burnley’s performance gained momentum after this, with Dastan Satpayev and substitute Aaron Ramsey both creating near scoring chances, though the visitors held on for the draw.
Middlesbrough head coach Kim Hellberg acknowledged his team’s strong control of the match but expressed some disappointment at dropping points after dominating much of the game. Burnley manager Nicky Hayen praised his players’ increased courage and determination in the second half, suggesting the performance offered encouragement to supporters despite the continued absence of a win.
