Burnley Football Club has dismissed manager Nicky Hayen following a 4-1 defeat to Lincoln City on Saturday. The club announced Hayen’s departure shortly after the final whistle, which came amid a visibly distressed performance and vocal disapproval from Burnley supporters who were present at the away fixture.
Hayen, 46, was seen taking in the heavy loss from the touchline as the away fans expressed their frustration with boos and a banner criticizing the team’s American owner, Alan Pace. The message underscored that the club’s difficulties extend beyond the manager’s role.
Burnley entered the match beset by significant injuries, missing ten first-team players, including striker Jamie Vardy, who had recently scored his maiden goal for the club against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The injury list deepened during the game when forward Armando Broja was forced off after just 13 minutes.
Defensive frailties have been a persistent issue for Burnley under Hayen, and Saturday’s contest showcased further costly mistakes. Despite taking a 1-0 lead through Andréas Hountondji’s goal, Burnley was unable to maintain their advantage. In added time before halftime, Lincoln capitalized on a long throw into Burnley’s six-yard area. The Lincoln forward Ben House managed to break past defender Kyle Walker to score an equalizer.
Walker's involvement in the goal drew significant attention. The defender, 36, who boasts 96 caps for England and a decorated career including numerous trophies with Manchester City, was criticized for failing to contest the ball and appeared to remain stationary as House scored. Walker was substituted at halftime.
The defeat further emphasized the challenges Burnley faces both on and off the pitch. Hayen’s exit reflects the club’s urgent desire to reverse its fortunes amid ongoing injury setbacks and performance issues. The club is expected to begin a search for a new manager as it looks to stabilize its position in the league.
