Craig Bellamy has confirmed he turned down the opportunity to become Burnley’s manager, citing his commitment to the Wales national team as the primary reason for staying put. The Welsh coach, who has been leading the national side since summer 2024, was reportedly approached by the Championship club earlier this year after Burnley was granted permission by the Football Association of Wales to enter discussions.

Bellamy, 47, who previously served as assistant manager to Vincent Kompany at Burnley between 2022 and 2024, described the approach as “flattering” but emphasized that his family and professional priorities lie with Wales. “For me, my partner, my kids, this is the place,” Bellamy said, explaining his decision to remain with the national team rather than accepting the Burnley role.

Burnley’s attempts to bring Bellamy back followed a formal process, with the club seeking permission from the Welsh FA before initiating talks. Bellamy spoke with Wales FA chief executive Noel Mooney and representatives from Burnley before making his decision. “It was as simple as that,” he said.

Despite Bellamy’s choice to stay, some supporters expressed disappointment that he considered leaving Wales in the first place. The coach had previously described his role with Wales as “the best job in the world” and reiterated his intention to fulfill his contract and lead the team through to UEFA Euro 2028. When asked about his future ambitions, Bellamy acknowledged the uncertainties of football management but expressed a strong desire to remain in charge for the tournament, which will feature matches in Cardiff.

“I’d love to – but that’s two years from now. Nothing’s guaranteed. I’m no different, I’m not more special than anyone else in management,” Bellamy said.

Looking ahead, Wales have Nations League fixtures scheduled, beginning with away matches against Portugal and Denmark later this month, followed by home games versus Norway and Denmark in early October. The national squad includes promising talents such as Leeds defender Jayden Lienou and Cardiff forward Cian Ashford, both named in the 28-player roster for the upcoming matches.
