Thailand’s regional economies continue to face mixed conditions as rising living costs weigh on consumer confidence, according to the August 2026 review from the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) of the Ministry of Commerce. Despite ongoing pressures from inflation, some areas are experiencing growth in business formations and tourism revenue.
The TPSO reported that the consumer price index (CPI) nationally increased by 2.53% in August, with all regions seeing price rises. The southern region experienced the highest inflation at 2.85%, followed closely by the central region at 2.81%, the northeast at 2.43%, Bangkok and its surrounding provinces at 2.38%, and the north at 2.21%. Food and non-alcoholic beverages were the main drivers of inflation, with prices in this category rising by 2.99%, compared to 2.23% across other goods and services.
Fresh vegetables, eggs, and dairy products recorded significant price increases, rising 7.42%, 5.16%, and similar magnitudes, respectively. The TPSO attributed ongoing upward pressure on these items to higher demand coupled with weather-related supply challenges. These factors align with global trends; the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation noted that its Food Price Index rose 2.5% year-on-year in August, with the Vegetable Oil Price Index reaching its highest point since June 2022, influenced by hot, dry conditions and El Niño effects in Southeast Asia.
Consumer confidence remained subdued, with the overall index falling to 49.5 in August—below the threshold indicating positive sentiment. Only the northeast showed confidence, scoring 52.0, while other regions, including Bangkok and the central region, recorded readings below 50.
On the business front, new registrations nationwide grew 3.6% from a year earlier to 7,913 in August. The northeast led this growth with a 36.3% increase, followed by the north at 28.4%, and the central region at 1%. Bangkok and the surrounding provinces saw a decline of 3.7%, and the south recorded an 11.5% decrease. However, business closures rose sharply by 35.2% overall, with the central region seeing a 69.1% surge in dissolutions. Other regions also experienced double-digit increases in closures.
Business sales data from June 2026 showed a slight national decline of 0.2%. The central region reported a strong increase of 17.1%, with the northeast, south, and north recording modest gains between 1.1% and 3.1%. Bangkok and its vicinity experienced a 5% sales drop.
Tourism revenue continued to recover unevenly, with visitor income nationwide rising 1.2% year-on-year to 235.16 billion baht in July. The north registered the most rapid growth at 14.8%, generating 17.98 billion baht, while the northeast posted a 5.2% increase. The central region’s earnings grew slightly by 0.7%, but Bangkok and surrounding areas declined by 0.1%, and the south fell 0.4%, highlighting regional disparities in tourism recovery.
Farm income growth in June was reported at 5.6% nationwide but varied widely across regions. The south saw the strongest regional increase at 4.5%, while the central, eastern, western, northern, and northeastern regions experienced declines ranging from 2.8% to 9.3%.
