The New York Yankees have adjusted their shortstop lineup as José Caballero earned consecutive starts at the position following his recent offensive surge. Manager Aaron Boone described the decision as “day-by-day” but indicated that, with the roster nearing full health, Caballero is likely to see more regular playing time at shortstop than Anthony Volpe.
Caballero sparked the Yankees on Monday night with two home runs and energized the team, leading Boone to start him again at shortstop on Tuesday during their series against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. Boone stated before the game that he intended to keep Caballero in the shortstop role regardless of opposing pitcher Ian Seymour, a left-hander. The Rays’ left-handed start had prompted a potential lineup adjustment that would have allowed Volpe to start at shortstop while moving Caballero to third base, second base, or right field. However, Boone opted to maintain Caballero at short, with Amed Rosario at third, Max Schuemann in right field, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second base.
Volpe’s role remains uncertain, as his defensive versatility has limited his opportunities at shortstop, especially since his promotion from Triple-A. Boone has not yet considered placing Volpe at second base, even as a rest option for Chisholm. Caballero’s recent performance, including his 10th home run Monday night—a career high—and his 20 stolen bases as of Tuesday, could influence Boone’s decisions going forward. Boone expressed confidence in Caballero’s presence in critical moments, highlighting the shortstop’s competitive mentality and belief in his ability as key factors in the position battle.
Max Schuemann’s start in right field provided a rest day for Jasson Domínguez, who has struggled offensively this season. Through 30 games, Domínguez holds a .209 batting average with a .641 OPS. Boone praised Schuemann’s ability to provide a spark and contribute in various roles.
Meanwhile, pitcher Max Fried is progressing in his recovery from a left elbow bone bruise. He is scheduled to throw a third live batting practice session on Saturday at Double-A Somerset. If successful, Fried could begin a rehab assignment following the All-Star break.
