Qatar’s Cabinet approved a draft law regulating precious metals and gemstones during a meeting held on Wednesday, chaired by Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani. The draft legislation, prepared by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in coordination with the Qatar General Organisation for Standards and Metrology, was subsequently referred to the Shura Council for further consideration.

The proposed law is intended to replace the existing Law No. 4 of 1978, which currently governs the control, inspection, and hallmarking of precious metals in Qatar. The updated framework seeks to modernize regulations to better align with international standards and evolving market demands.

Key provisions of the draft law include comprehensive regulations covering the handling and trade of precious metals and gemstones. It also aims to enhance the supervisory responsibilities of the Qatar General Organisation for Standards and Metrology, the body tasked with overseeing quality assurance and standardization efforts within Qatar.

Officials emphasized that the new measures are designed to ensure the quality and safety of precious metal and gemstone products available in the market. Additionally, the legislation is intended to strengthen consumer protection and safeguard the interests of all market participants.

The approval marks a significant step in Qatar’s ongoing efforts to update its legislative environment to support transparent and secure commercial practices in the sector. The draft law now awaits detailed review and potential amendments by the Shura Council before it can be enacted.
