As the Muttrah Teleferik cable car project in Muscat approaches its planned trial run in December, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) has unveiled a series of investment opportunities aimed at enhancing small and medium-sized enterprises’ involvement in the initiative. The project is positioned as a key tourism development within Oman, and SMEDA is actively seeking licensed businesses with innovative proposals to boost the overall visitor experience and economic sustainability.
The opportunities cover a diverse range of sectors including adventure tourism, family entertainment, retail, food and beverage, and digital advertising. Among the highlighted ventures are a mountain bike operation on a 500 to 700-meter trail located at the Summit Station, and a mountain toboggan run featuring single or double rides on an 867-meter metal track descending the slopes. Additional attractions under consideration include a giant swing and an indoor, climate-controlled children’s play area offering educational and leisure activities for families.
SMEDA is also encouraging investments in outdoor kiosks and restaurants, a specialized flower shop, a retailer focusing on traditional Omani sweets, and the installation of digital LED advertising screens at cable car stations to enhance visitor engagement and create new revenue streams.
To support SMEs, SMEDA is offering several incentives. These include assistance with developing a project’s visual identity, marketing and promotional efforts through the Muttrah Cable Car’s media channels, and the possibility of partial investment partnerships in selected initiatives. Businesses can also access expert consulting on operations, marketing strategies, and business development.
Financial backing is available through SMEDA’s Riyada programme, which offers funding up to RO 500,000 for qualified projects, subject to terms and conditions. This initiative reflects broader efforts to stimulate entrepreneurship and diversify economic activities linked to Oman's expanding tourism infrastructure.
With its range of targeted investment options and comprehensive support package, SMEDA’s efforts aim to leverage the Muttrah Teleferik project not only as a tourism attraction but also as a platform for SME growth and innovation within the Sultanate.
