The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra has announced Ilan Kumaranayake Mendel as its new resident conductor for the 2026-27 season. Originally from Halifax, Mendel brings a strong background in trombone performance and conducting. He holds a diploma from The Glenn Gould School at The Royal Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Toronto.

Mendel’s experience includes serving as the inaugural assistant conductor of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra. He has also conducted ensembles such as the University of Toronto Contemporary Music Ensemble and Trombone Choir, and has appeared as a guest conductor with the Nova Scotia Youth Wind Ensemble. This summer, he is working as an assistant conductor at the National Academy Orchestra of Canada.

He is set to make his debut with the Calgary Philharmonic on Sept. 9 during a free outdoor concert at Alpine Park. Mendel will also lead education, community, pops, and special programs throughout the season.

“I am delighted to be joining the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and to join the remarkable work it does in the community,” Mendel said. He expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with the orchestra’s musicians and contributing to its artistic and outreach initiatives.

The orchestra has been without a music director since Rune Bergmann’s departure in 2025 and continues to search for a successor. During this period, Calgary Philharmonic has worked with numerous guest conductors, including principal guest conductor Karen Kamesek, who will remain in her role for the coming season.

Mendel’s position as resident conductor is supported by an endowed chair sponsored by Mary Rozsa de Coquet. This role is designed to provide early-career conductors with opportunities to develop their skills in conducting and leadership while serving as ambassadors for the orchestra’s artistic efforts.
