Catherine Breed completed a historic swim along the entire California coastline, covering approximately 900 miles over the course of 111 days. The 33-year-old endurance swimmer began her journey in July at the Oregon border and concluded it on Monday near the California-Mexico border.
Throughout her swim, Breed navigated various challenges, including encounters with sharks, crab traps, severe weather brought on by El Niño, and a polluted river. To avoid the environmental hazards posed by sewage and pollution from the Tijuana River, she finished her swim privately three miles offshore before emerging at Coronado Beach for a public celebration.
Breed, a native of Pleasanton, California, and a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, described reaching the end of the swim as an emotional moment filled with pride and relief. She acknowledged the support of her team and expressed joy at successfully completing the endeavor in challenging conditions marked by record warm water temperatures and the threat of hurricanes along the coast.
The celebration at Coronado Beach included supporters who gathered onshore to cheer as Breed swam ashore from the open sea, marking the completion of the first recorded swim along the full length of California’s state coastline.
