Mr. Cottrell, sometimes referred to as "Posh" George, was reportedly confronted in the early hours outside his property. He described being grabbed by an assailant wearing blue latex gloves as he fled on foot. Initially treated by authorities as an isolated crime, the incident has drawn fresh scrutiny amid heightened security concerns within Reform UK. Party members have suggested a potential connection between this assault, the arson attack on Mr. Farage's home, and the later killing of Ms. Widdecombe, describing these as potentially linked, hate-fueled acts targeting the party.

Reform UK aides have also noted a profile published in Tatler in August 2025, which detailed Mr. Cottrell’s residence and mentioned that Mr. Farage frequently stayed at the West London property. This, they argue, could have made the location a target for those intending to harm the party leader.

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that the case involving Mr. Cottrell remains closed after "extensive enquiries" failed to identify any suspects. The force stated the investigation could be reopened should new information emerge. A Reform UK source responded to this, emphasizing the importance of keeping an open mind given recent developments. The source said it would be “strange to dismiss the possibility of a link” between the April attack, the firebombing, and Ms. Widdecombe’s murder.
